Chair of the Munich Re Foundation
Thomas Loster a geographer, was a member of the GeoRisks Research Group at Munich Reinsurance Company in Munich for 16 years. He was appointed Chairman of the Munich Re Foundation in July 2004. The Foundation addresses major global challenges – environmental and climate change, water as a resource and risk factor, population growth, disaster prevention and poverty reduction.
Microinsurance is a key element of the work of Munich Re Foundation. The foundation organizes the world’s largest conference on microinsurance every year, funds the research of market data and the production of comprehensive microinsurance textbooks. Thomas is also active in promoting microinsurance as one option for improved climate change adaptation.
He was a member of the German National Committee of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and also a member of the German Council for Sustainable Development from 2006 to 2010. He is a member of the World Bank/IFC Advisory Panel on Business and Sustainability.
He also is an Executive Board Member of the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII), which looks for insurance solutions to weather disasters in the developing and emerging nations.
