Fergal joined the BBC in 1989 as Northern Ireland correspondent. In August 1990 he was appointed Southern African correspondent and from 1990 to 1994 he reported on the township unrest in South Africa, the first multi-racial elections once apartheid ended and the genocide in Rwanda. In 1996 he was awarded an OBE, he won the Amnesty International Press Awards in 1993 and the Amnesty television prize in 1994 for his investigation of the Rwandan genocide, Journey Into Darkness.
